Common questions

Which exchange rate does Customs use?
Customs publishes its own monthly rate and applies it to every entry. It is usually a little higher than the bank rate. The calculator uses it by default and lets you override it. The landing page shows how the rate feeds into the full formula.
Why is freight split across my items?
Customs values each item on its CIF, which includes a share of the freight and insurance. The share is proportional to each item's value, so a US$900 laptop carries more of the freight than a US$20 T-shirt.
Does this work for Aeropost, Skybox and other couriers?
Yes. Every courier clears through the same Customs rules, so the duty, OPT and VAT come out the same whichever skybox you use. What differs is the freight and handling each courier charges. Put your courier's freight in the Freight field and add their handling fee to the total yourself.
Does sea freight pay the online purchase tax?
No. The 7% applies to goods bought online, shipped by air and consigned to a person. Choose Sea freight and OPT drops to zero. Duty and VAT still apply.
