How Customs gets to the number

Each tax is charged on top of the last one. That stacking is why rough guesses come in low.

  1. First, the customs value

What Customs says the goods are worth once they arrive.

Common questions

What is the online purchase tax?
A 7% tax on the customs value (item price plus freight and insurance) of goods bought online, shipped by air and addressed to a person. Sea freight and business imports do not pay it.
Is VAT charged on the duty too?
Yes. VAT at 12.5% is charged on the customs value plus the duty plus the online purchase tax, not on the item price alone.
Why is the exchange rate higher than my bank's?
Customs publishes its own rate each month and uses it for every entry. It is usually a little above the bank selling rate. The calculator uses the Customs rate and shows the date it took effect.
Are phones and laptops really duty free?
They pay nothing at all. Since January 2021 the Finance Act 2020 has removed customs duty, the online purchase tax and VAT on cell phones, laptops, tablets, software, and accessories and peripherals. You still pay the freight and whatever your courier charges. The Customs website has not been updated, so a courier quoting you 12.5% VAT on a phone is using the old table. Price a phone
